Origin

Now a “Ghost Distillery” Port Dundas is sadly no more.

Built in 1811 at the highest point in the city next to the banks of the Forth & Clyde Canal, Glasgow’s Port Dundas distillery stood for 200 years until it was closed and demolished in 2011 by its owners Diageo.

In the 1860s it was merged with the Cowlairs distillery and then in 1877 became one of the founder members of the DCL group (which eventually became Diageo).

By 1885 Port Dundas grew in size to become the largest distillery in Scotland, its three Coffey and five pot stills were producing over two million gallons a year, and in an approach we’d today label as innovative, was using ‘American corn’, barley, and rye.

In 1902 another neighbour Dundashill was merged into the complex. Dundashill at that time was the largest pot still distillery in the world, its two wash stills and 10 spirit stills making both double- and triple-distilled malt, peated and unpeated.

The complex could also boast at the time the world's tallest brick chimney which was 138 metres tall!  The 20th century was tough for many Scotch Whisky distilleries, and two fires in 1903 and 1916 destroyed much of the facility - thankfully Port Dundas was rebuilt and thrived. It even managed to survive the Luftwaffe’s intense bombing campaign of 1940 and 1941.

Once the war was over it was onwards and upwards and at one point was producing 39 million litres of spirit which was needed for the Haig, Johnnie Walker and White Horse blends amongst others.

With only a finite amount of this excellent liquid left, this is an incredible chance to own a bottle, as one day it will all be gone, the only choice you’ll have to make is do you Enjoy, Gift, or Collect!

Tasting Notes

Aroma (Nose):
A rich, dessert-like bouquet featuring crème brûlée, vanilla fudge, caramel, and sticky brown sugar, balanced with orange pith and a hint of milk chocolate.

Taste (Palate):
Deep and layered, offering chocolate-covered raisins, demerara sugar, and sweet pipe tobacco, spiced with all spice and rounded out by thick vanilla custard and a hint of caramelised banana.

Finish:
Smooth and warming, with lingering notes of dark honey, refined oak, and a subtle touch of cracked black pepper.

Overall Impression:
A characterful dram that combines the elegance and sweetness of aged Scotch grain with the boldness and punch of a quality bourbon.
